My message to the Governor: Tax the Rich!
3 July 2009
(I sent this today by e-mail to the Governor of California and also to my State Assemblymember and to my State Senator.)
Dear Governor Schwarzenegger:
I voted against all the propositions in the recent election. However, you were wrong in concluding that such votes, at least in my case, represent a lack of support for tax increases. I am very much in favor of increasing the income tax rates for the wealthiest Californians, but I believe that laws should be passed thoughtfully by well-informed legislators, and not by voters like me who can barely understand the propositions with which they are presented, let alone their full ramifications.
A recent analysis by the California Budget Project found that the income gap has been widening in recent years between the wealthiest and the middle class in California. The wealthiest Californians made spectacular gains in the most recent good economic times. Now that the State is in a financial crisis it is time for them to help the State and the people who made their fortunes possible.
I should note that I am a State employee (a psychiatrist in the state prison system). However, it is not concern about the source of my salary that motivates me to write this. I have believed since long before I became a State worker that the wealthy are under-taxed in this country. Now more than ever it is appropriate and necessary to ask them to pay more.
